The Data Engineer performs duties under the general supervision of the Director of Enterprise Applications and Development, working independently and collaboratively to support the University’s enterprise data infrastructure. This position plays a lead role in building and maintaining the Snowflake data warehouse environment, designing scalable ETL pipelines, and ensuring secure, efficient access to institutional data.

The Data Engineer will collaborate closely with software engineers, institutional research, and the Office of Innovation and Enhancement to deliver reliable data solutions that support analytics, reporting, and strategic decision-making across the University.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and optimize scalable data pipelines and integrations using Snowflake as the primary data warehouse.
  • Build and maintain ETL/ELT processes to ingest and transform data from various sources, including SQL Server, Workday, and cloud-based services.
  • Implement and enforce data modeling, schema design, and performance best practices in Snowflake.
  • Manage Snowflake security, role-based access controls, and data governance in compliance with FERPA and institutional policy.
  • Automate data workflows using Python and Azure-based services.
  • Collaborate with data consumers (e.g., Power BI developers, institutional research) to ensure data is accurate, timely, and usable.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot Snowflake environments, optimize query performance, and resolve data pipeline issues.
  • Document system architecture, data flows, and technical configurations.
  • Evaluate emerging Snowflake features and ecosystem tools to improve scalability, automation, and maintainability.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

To perform this FLSA-exempt position successfully, an individual must have the skills and experience necessary to execute each of the tasks listed in the Responsibilities section.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience administering and managing a Snowflake environment, including configuration, optimization, and security.
  • Proficiency in building and managing Snowflake environments, including data loading, transformation (Snowflake SQL, Streams, Tasks), and security management.
  • Strong experience developing ETL/ELT solutions, integrating cloud and on-prem data sources.
  • Solid SQL skills and hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Experience using Python for data transformation, orchestration, and automation.
  • Familiarity with Workday reporting data or similar ERP/SaaS data platforms is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of cloud environments, especially Azure.
  • Experience supporting business intelligence solutions using tools like Power BI.
  • Understanding of data governance and security frameworks, including FERPA compliance.
  • Strong collaboration and documentation skills; ability to work across technical and non-technical teams.
