At Rival Insurance Technology, we’re on a mission to innovate insurance together. Our Data Estate team powers insights, automation, and smarter decisions across the business—driving the intelligence behind our next-generation platform.
We’re looking for a Data Engineer who thrives in a fast-moving, collaborative environment and enjoys turning complex data into real business value. You’ll help us design and scale modern infrastructure, build high-impact data products, and enable advanced use cases—including AI-powered solutions.
Here’s Why You’ll Want to Build With Us
- Brains Meet Data – You’ll work with a modern Azure + Databricks stack, weaving AI-powered frameworks like LangChain into real business applications. Instead of wrangling legacy systems, you’ll be solving meaningful data problems that fuel innovation.
- Modern Tools, Modern Thinking – From Delta Lake to CI/CD pipelines, we’re building with best-in-class tools and practices. You’ll have a voice in shaping how our data estate evolves, and your ideas won’t get lost in the backlog.
- Your Work Matters – This isn’t just ETL. The pipelines and models you design will power insights, automation, and smarter decisions across Rival—from underwriting to claims to customer experience.
- Remote-First, People-Always – We’re fully remote across Canada. You’ll collaborate with thoughtful, curious teammates who respect your time, trust your expertise, and want you to thrive.
- No Robots in Leadership – Our leaders listen first, guide with clarity, and invest in growth. Career conversations aren’t yearly checkboxes—they’re ongoing. We celebrate wins, learn from stumbles, and occasionally laugh way too hard in Teams.
What You’ll Do
- Design, build, and maintain scalable, resilient data pipelines using Databricks, Azure Data Factory, and SQL-based tools.
- Develop and deploy Python-based solutions that support data processing, APIs, and service integration.
- Connect internal and third-party platforms via REST APIs and other web services.
- Collaborate with developers, analysts, and business stakeholders to design solutions that fit evolving data needs.
- Champion data quality, observability, and governance—balancing agility with responsible data practices.
- Proactively identify areas for improvement, propose solutions, and drive iteration—aligned to KPIs and business priorities.
What You Bring
- 3–5+ years of experience in data engineering, backend development, or a similar technical role.
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure (Data Lake, Azure SQL, Data Factory).
- Advanced proficiency in Databricks (Delta Lake, Spark, workflows, notebooks).
- Strong Python development skills—particularly for data transformation and APIs.
- Familiarity with LangChain and other modern data/AI frameworks.
- Solid understanding of data modeling, warehousing, and performance optimization.
- Familiarity with DevOps practices, Git, and CI/CD pipelines in a cloud environment.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work independently while staying aligned with a fully remote team.
You Might Be a Fit If You…
- Are a self-starter who follows through, even when things get ambiguous.
- Enjoy solving complex problems and delivering scalable solutions.
- See iteration as a strength, not a sign of failure.
- Appreciate working with people from diverse backgrounds and geographies.
- Are excited to contribute to a culture of ownership, accountability, and experimentation.
Bonus Points For
- Experience with Power BI or other BI tools.
- Familiarity with data privacy regulations (PIPEDA, GDPR, etc.).
- Exposure to machine learning workflows or MLOps practices.
